Update the U.S. Census Origin Categories to Better Represent The American People

Created by J.C. on August 05, 2016

Defining race for some groups by geographical origin and others by skin color is inconsistent, confusing, and incorrectly represents the American people. The U.S. Census Bureau regularly improves the census categories to more accurately represent Americans. On this premise, it would be appropriate to modify two of the current groups; “White, Black or African American” to “European American, African American”. Geographic and/or nationality best identifies ancestry with constant populations and groups that also constantly mix with others. It eliminates the constant confusion and uncertainty from describing race by skin color when skin color has constant variations. Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Canada successfully use only geographic and/or nationality in their official statistics.
