If a potential gun buyer is being treated for a mental illness or has been in the past, every pharmacy in America has the social security number of the patient in their database. It would be very easy to cross-reference these databases with the gun purchaser’s database to at least require an additional review or outright refusal of purchase depending on the level of the mental illness and/or the medication prescribed now or taken in the past. If a match is made that this person has been treated for any type of mental illness a mandatory 30-day waiting period shall be in place while the records are reviewed in person, not by a computer. This information will not conflict with HIPPA, as no information will be released publicly, only to the gun buyer. A ban now is rash and unjust.
