People who have served honorably, some in combat, but were found in simple possession of marijuana, can be given a less than honorable discharge. This is a bar to Veterans Benefits. I would like to see non-violent possession result in an honorable discharge if the person has served at least one year. Our country has changed its views on marijuana over the past few decades. The Justice Department has recently released 6,000 prisoners including those serving for possession. I recognize that commanders must be able to maintain discipline and order. So, legalizing use of marijuana for active duty personnel may not be appropriate, at this time. But saddling an otherwise good person with a less than honorable discharge, seems extreme.
