As we increasingly rely upon electronic means for voting, we must act to uphold the integrity of our democracy by ensuring that votes are registered and counted in an accurate, secure, transparent, and easily auditable fashion to meet the demands of public confidence and trust.
Unfortunately, that is not where we are today. Instead, we commonly make use of commercial voting machines manufactured by the private sector. The security and functionality of these voting machines is not easily determined, nor is the process transparent or easily audited.
Given the importance of public confidence in the voting process, we demand that voting machines used in public elections conform to an open-source model, where all source-code, hardware, and builds are subject to audit by any interested party.
