Since the League of Women Voters stopped sponsoring them in protest against the two major US political parties, our presidential debates have been run by the Democrats and Republicans.
In 2012, their joint commission blocked the Green Party, the Libertarian Party, and other candidates with significant followings among American voters. This denial of participation actively damages the viability of third parties and, in turn, limits voters' options.
We need more voices in these debates to challenge the self-interested two-party system and to break up the gridlock that they together have created in Washington.
Urge the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates to include at least one third-party candidate in the 2016 debate.
