We the People elect members of the Congress to serve us by representing our interests. Our interests are ignored and our confidences insulted by omnibus package legislation that allows unwanted measures to pass in tandem with necessary legislation. The President should have a line-item veto for precisely this occasion. Congressional members should be required to read legislation before it is voted on. That is not too much to ask. If legislation needs to be passed, legislators should take the time to draft it concisely enough that it can be read and digested before a vote. Unrelated measures should not be drafted together. Earmarks are a betrayal of the American people's trust. This is a common-sense request. President Obama- please urge Congress to make these changes.
