Many homeowners who purchased a home at the height of the housing boom owe more money than their home is worth. These families, through no fault of their own, are left underwater by effects of the financial crisis. That is why, in 2007, Congress passed the Mortgage Forgiveness Tax Relief Act. Underwater homeowners whose lenders allow them to sell their home for less than they owe have not had to pay taxes on that debt thanks to this law, which passed shortly after the housing bubble burst. This lifeline to American families expired at the end of 2013. Underwater homeowners who would prefer to sell their home now may have to pay high taxes on their outstanding debt. We must prevent this from happening. S.1187, the extension of that bill is critical before year end its in Senate WAITING.
