On June 21st, the longest day of the year, the United States should formally declare a space day. This day would be used to both encourage youth to look towards the stars as a potential career, and help provide a little bit of wonder for us all.
Beginning an hour after sunset on the west coast, the continental United States should turn off all non-essential lights (For example, street lamps but not traffic lights) for an hour. Alaska and Hawaii will participate an hour after their sunsets.
This will allow for the US to cut back on energy use slightly, help increase interest among the population about space, and help the world to realize our place in the universe/make discoveries as turning off light pollution for an hour will open a view to the galaxy that hasn't been seen in centuries.
