Eritrea has become one of the world's most repressive nations and has limited freedom of expression to the point where its government has incarcerated over 10,000 political prisoners in various unknown prisons throughout the country.
Part of the problem is that Eritrea is governed by a strongman in President Isaias Afewerki, along with many "yes-men" in the cabinet and army. In order for Eritrea to become a free and productive country, it must implement the representative democracy that is found in its constitution. Eritrea has only been mentioned once in Obama' s time in office. By urging the Eritrean government to make these changes, the Obama administration will make it clear that it does not condone Eritrea's current actions and wishes the best for Eritrea and its citizens.
