According to the Akamai State of the Internet report (http://www.akamai.com/stateoftheinternet/), average U.S. broadband connection rates are at 6.6 Mbps. Many metropolitan service providers offer broadband packages with base speeds of 1-3 Mbps, and premium packages with speeds up to 50 Mbps. Mid-range services include 10-15 Mbps connections. Yet all these services are advertised as "high speed".
We need to redefine the term "high speed internet" to reduce market confusion. Customers may be purchasing 3-15 Mbps connection packages, unaware that these connections are average-speed, rather than above-average or truly "high" speed. Redefining "high speed internet" will encourage adoption and stimulate infrastructure improvement.
