European studies have proven that the 1.5mg dose of Levonorgestrel used in the emergency contraceptive drug Plan B One-Step have lessened effectiveness in women weighing more than 165lbs and no effect for those over 176lbs. EU health agencies have mandated packaging changes for their version of the drug, warning that it is not recommended for women weighing over 165lbs.
But here in America (where the average female weight is 164lbs) the FDA has remained silent, despite the fact that studies revealing these problems go back to 2011.
Making Plan B One-Step available over the counter was divisive, expensive legal battle for this country. If we are going to make the drug so openly available, then we need to give the women considering using it this important information.
