The United States should allow women to serve in combative situations in the United States military. About 20% of the military consists of women, none of which are allowed to engage in combat while deployed. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has said that he is lifting the military’s official ban on women in combat; however, the Pentagon has been given 3 years, until 2016, to act on this. This being despite the fact that the Secretary of Defense can approve the new regulation, and after giving Congress 30 days, it would become law, unless Congress was to pass new legislation, which is unlikely. This petition is to urge Secretary to speed up the process and approve the regulation, so that after 30 days of him approving it, women would be allowed to serve in combative positions.
