This country is still mired in racial tension. Anyone watching the news can see that, despite slavery’s abolition more than 150 years ago, there’s enormous social disparity, and black people have been forced to swim up-current for the entirety of their existence on this continent. Additionally, while the U.S. government has worked to redress its past transgressions on other groups, such as indigenous Americans or the Japanese citizens interned during the second World War, it has never undertaken an effort to assess the impacts of its historical policies, both slavery and the broader assaults on the black community since, from Jim Crow to predatory financial practices to Clinton-era criminal justice “reforms” that sent generations of black men to prison.
