Kenya is the most recent country in Africa to propose a "Kill the Gays" law, joining Uganda and Nigeria as a nation that would unfairly and unjustly target its LGBT population. This year, many LGBT refugees fled from Uganda to Kenya to escape persecution. Now, even Kenya may not be a safe place.
By the terms of the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, the United States has a responsibility along with the global community to offer asylum to LGBT Africans "unable or, owing to such fear, [are] unwilling to avail [themselves] of the protection" of their governments.
With these anti-gay laws, countries like Kenya make it impossible for LGBT Africans to live without fear of persecution. We can't stand idly by and watch fellow human beings suffer simply because of who they are.
