The current voting system, known as "first pass" voting does not give equal say to 3rd party candidates or voters. This, in turn, entrenches political talking points rather than encourage honest debate and discussion of the issues. The Alternative Vote or "Fair Vote" methodology allows for voters to rank candidates in elections so they can vote for the candidate who best represents their views and beliefs, without feeling they are "throwing away their vote." Research has shown that ranking and other alternative voting mechanisms allow for a more representative democracy and a more vibrant and enlightening discussion of the issues.
