A Sudanese Sharia court has convicted Meriam Yehya Ibrahim Ishag of apostasy (leaving Islam for another religion) and adultery (marrying a Christian man, which the court does not recognize as a legitimate marriage). The sentence handed down by the same court is flogging for the adultery and death by hanging for apostasy. The court has granted a stay of execution until after Ms. Ishag gives birth - she is eight months pregnant with her second child.
Amnesty International's Sudan researcher Manar Idriss has termed this sentence as "a flagrant breach of international human rights law." He states that "apostasy and adultery are acts which should not be considered crimes at all." I am asking President Obama do all he can to prevent such an atrocity.
