The Air Force (AF) went away with the Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) ranks many years ago. In times of budgetary concerns, and to bridge the gap between highly skilled Enlisted and Commissioned it could be an efficient way to trim Commissioned officer billets while also offering options for motivated enlisted individuals. Most MAJCOMs are requesting more Chief Master Sergeants but the numbers won't allow it. In a time where we have to do more with less the CWO would help fill many middle management where there may have had to have been an Officer.
