Many parents of non traditional English heritage are prevented from giving their children traditional names because the US Government refuses to allow the use of diacritic marks on birth certificates. Those who wish to give their children names that are for example Irish, Spanish or French to name but a few, are prevented from freely picking names because of the US Governments refusal to allow the marks. This means in essence that the government is in fact inserting itself in one of the most personal decisions that a parent can make, the naming of their child. Many other governments around the globe can easily handle the issue of diacritic marks on birth certificates and passports so it should be easily implemented by a government with as many resources as ours.
