I believe President Obama should use the Executive powers of his office to make November 6, and all future Presidential Election dates, a national holiday. Having Election Day as a national holiday will make it easier for citizens to vote, especially working people. It will also reduce the chances for success of those who would suppress the vote by making it more difficult for women, minorities, the elderly, and the poor to participate in the process. Under the pretense of preventing voter fraud, governors and legislators in a number of states -- among them Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas --have enacted laws with the intended effect of preventing people from voting. Regardless of who we choose to vote for, our democracy is healthier when more, rather than fewer people vote.
