The Supreme Court recently rendered an opinion striking down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act. The majority opinion concluded that this important part of the legislation is outdated as America has changed. The Court is correct in stating that America had changed. Traditionally discriminatory states and jurisdictions are no longer the only ones attempting to participate in voter suppression.
Texas, Alabama and Mississippi - states formerly blocked from moving forward on Voter ID laws - all stated they would move to enact them immediately. Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida among others have committed to combinations of Voter ID, limiting and/or ending early voting and ending Sunday voting.
What is the president's plan to encourage Congress to do its job and protect our voting rights?
