Capitol Hill's culture promotes corruption, cronyism, and a shameless abandonment of principles in the name of reelection. We can't blame the individuals, the system's incentives run contrary to the public's, our representatives are acting like rational players in seeking their own interests.
To avoid a political system that promotes the interests of few at the expense of many, according to Fed. 57, requires the election of those who possess the wisdom to discern, and virtue to pursue, the common good of society; and in the next place, the most effectual precautions for keeping them virtuous whilst they continue to hold their public trust. The most effectual precaution being a limitation of the term of appointments as will maintain a proper responsibility to the people.
