Though we have not in recent times made use of landmines, our refusal to sign the Ottawa Treaty sets a bad precedent. We believe that we hold ourselves to a higher standard than those we fight today; and have not laid mines(to any widespread level since Vietnam) nor set explosives to kill innocent people, yet we refuse to sign a treaty to show our resolve to hold ourselves to a higher standard. I ask that we become the first superpower to step forward and agree to discontinue the use and stockpiling of landmines. Our actions influence global policy and how the world sees the entire western world.
