The prison system currently provides its inmates with room, board, healthcare, and education, at the expense of those they have wronged. It costs an average of $129 per day to house a single inmate in the prison system. In decades passed, prisons grew and made everything they needed and brought in revenue with a broad spectrum of labor that reduced much of each prison’s costs. I propose to increase the self-sufficiency in prisons, perhaps a few to start with. Due to this, costs to maintain the prison would shrink, perhaps greatly. I also move for the inmates to produce agricultural or industrial items that are commonly used or imported into the U.S. Jobs would be created to build the means for the production of the goods, and the inmates would provide an almost free to use labor force.
