We produce (and waste) enough food in this country to feed the hungry of this world many times over. There are some statistics as staggering as "one week of US military spending could wipe out world hunger" and by doing so we could end the resentment that many throughout the world feel for our wasteful culture. The government should take it upon itself to show the world that America really is about making peace, not war. Food and clean water for all is peace, it's that simple.
As it is, our food system is incredible inefficient. A good example would be corn. Only a small fraction of corn we produce goes to feeding people and on a large scale it costs nothing. Simply, set up a nationally funded cannery and use the military to distribute it.
