Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, inserted an amendment in the Farm Bill to nullify state animal protection laws that were passed by citizens. Laws we passed against factory farms (such as gestation crates) would be allowed against our wishes. The Humane Society of the United States says: "The King amendment was approved by voice vote, despite forceful arguments raised against it by Reps. Jim Costa, D-Calif., Jeff Denham, R-Calif., John Garamendi, D-Calif., and Kurt Schrader, D-Ore." Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States says "we are deeply distressed by the House committee's support for the amendment to eviscerate the powers of the States to establish and maintain laws governing...animal welfare." This attacks the 10th Amendment and a threat to consumers!
