We are VERY dissatisfied with the 2012 fiscal year's National Defense Authorization Act (S.1867), in particular its detention provisions (SEC 1031) which would allow American citizens to be detained as enemy combatants for committing a "belligerent act". We STRONGLY urge The President to VETO this legislation, and force our senators to re-review it.
The powers granted are vastly overbroad and UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Due process is a core American value, especially with the treatment of American citizens, and even moreso on American soil. The United States is NOT a battlefield; Americans have an inalienable right to legal representation; terrorizing U.S. citizens is NOT the way to combat terrorism.
National Defense Authorization Acts are important, and should not be bastardized like this.
