HR 287, also known as the Video Games Ratings Enforcement Act, is a bill currently going through the House of Representative that would make it illegal to attempt to sell a video games without an ESRB rating.
This bill directly conflicts with the First Amendment, as it would prevent the development and sale of Independent video games. In addition to conflicting with the First Amendment, making unrated games unsellable, with the threat of a $5000 fine, would single-handedly shut down indie gaming, punishing the developers of these games.
Indie gaming is a large scene, with major titles like Minecraft falling under this label. By passing this bill, a multi-million dollar facet of the gaming industry will cease to exist, adding to the already high level of unemployment in the country.
