The Keystone XL pipeline, if signed into law, will create a pipeline that passes through the center of US carrying Canadian tar sands oil. This oil, when burned, creates more emissions of CO2 than almost any other variety. It would substantially accelerate climate change. The pipeline will also be built through the Ogallala Aquifer creating a substantial public health risk. Should a spill occur people throughout Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Colorado could have their drinking water contaminated.
The economic benefits of this pipeline have been substantially overstated. According to the state department there would only be 35 permanent full-time jobs.
The President must prevent the pipeline from passing. The environment and our health are worth more than 35 jobs.
