A Senate proposal originally touted as protecting Americans' e-mail privacy has been quietly rewritten to authorize warrantless governmental access to Americans' most sensitive personal documents. More than 22 federal agencies would be able to access Americans' e-mail, Google Docs files, Facebook wall posts, and Twitter direct messages without a search warrant. The FBI and Homeland Security would gain full access to Internet accounts without notifying either the owner or a judge.
This bill is a dramatic violation of our fourth amendment rights. It is also nearly impossible for tech companies to implement in its current form, and would destroy the burgeoning cloud services industry. Please guarantee the American people that you will veto this pernicious legislation.
