Copyright infringement is wrong—but the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), known as PROTECT IP Act in the Senate, is a cure worse than the disease. SOPA would grant government and corporations unprecedented power over the Domain Name System (DNS)—the backbone of the Internet—to blacklist any website accused of “facilitating” copyright infringement, without any trial or legal review of the accusations and evidence. SOPA would permit our government to force ISPs and search engines to block these websites, just like the Communist Party in China censors its citizens’ Internet access. The Motion Picture Association, Recording Industry Association, and Business Software Alliance are lobbying Congress to pass SOPA. We call on President Obama to veto it and support free speech and Internet innovation.
