On May 1 and May 8, 2016, Vietnamese people rallied in Saigon and Hanoi to protest against the pollution causing mass fish deaths in the central of Vietnam. The peaceful demonstrations were repeatedly met with violence by the Vietnamese police and its paramilitary arm. Hundreds of demonstrators were illegally arrested and transported to a location for interrogation. The police and its paramilitary arm beat the demonstrators, including elders, women and minors on the streets and when transporting and interrogating them.
The Vietnamese government with its actions has violated human rights and civil liberties, the rights of child as adopted by the U.N. We ask urgently that the U.S. Government take notice of the multiple violations and voice their concerns to the Vietnamese government.
