The city of Camden, New Jersey is being gripped by an epidemic of violence unknown in recent history in this country. In a city of just 77,000 people, 64 people have been murdered so far this year. Economic development has taken off in recent years along its waterfront and downtown, but the people who live in the city continue to suffer with poverty, drugs, and crime running rampant. The vast majority of Camdenites love their city, and work hard every day to contribute to the economy and their communities. Their struggle in the midst of such tragedy deserves to be acknowledged. Instead of hanging our heads year after year at the sorry state of Camden, we need to give hope back to the people.
