Vitter’s amendment would prohibit convicted murderers, rapists, and other sex offenders under 18 UC Chapter 110 of the federal code from receiving food stamps.Currently there is a lifetime ban for convicted drug felons, though many states have opted out of or modified the restriction. Vitter’s amendment would extend the lifetime food stamp ban to dangerous sex offenders and murderers, and would not allow states to opt out or modify this ban. This amendment aside from being humanly immoral, would also lead to greater numbers of recidivism by convicts with no support base in order to secure basic life necessities like food and water.
