The USA is the only high income country that does not guarantee a paid parental leave. Therefore, America’s working parents always deal with a tough choice-to enjoy staying with their newborn or to come back to work. Very often the choice is made in favor of job because of the financial reason.
We think that the parents should have a right to stay at home with their new child for at least the first few months. Only 3 states guarantee this right: CA,NJ, and RI. Their experience proves that paid parental leave: a)promotes family values; b)increases employee retention and reduces turn-over; c)the parents that take paid parental leave do not depend on public assistance programs; d)encouraging taking advantage of paid parental leave leads to better health outcomes for both mother and new baby.
