Unemployed Americans struggle to pay their bills and save their homes. The average length of unemployment is between 18 and 24 months. Unemployment benefits are less than a person's previous salary, even more so for those who earned over 45K per year. As a result, these Americans need to use up their savings and take early withdrawals on their retirement plans to supplement the unemployment benefit while searching for their next job. Instead of allowing those unemployed to utilize their own money to save their homes and credit, they are then penalized. The government is literally taking hard earned monies from their struggling citizens at a time when they need support! Abolishing this penalty will cost no money but will go a long way in helping Americans in need.
