Since the formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) by the Kurdistan National Assembly in 1992, Kurds have steadily advanced as an autonomous entity within Iraq. In addition to unprecedented economic development, The KRG has taken steps to secure its citizens, territory and resources, while also providing sanctuary for hundreds of thousands of refugees from the ongoing conflict, including Christians and other religious and ethnic minorities. However, due to mounting calls from their constituency and also citing the increased instability and lack of security in Iraq, the KRG has announced plans to move forward with a referendum on a declaration of independence in the coming
