Judge Aaron Persky sentenced Brock Turner to a mere six months in a local prison for raping an unconscious woman, completely ignoring the statutory minimum of two years. Prosecutors asked that Turner be sentenced six years for the assault. Persky justified the ephemeral sentence and probation solely due to the fact that Turner was an elite athlete at a top university. Judge Persky's decision is completely unacceptable because it signifies that the rape of an unconscious woman was not "real rape" due to the fact that the perpetrator was a high-achieving student. This decision is highly misogynistic, and perpetuates violence against women. We need judges who understand sexual violence and assault, and take it seriously.
