Each year the United States Postal Service delivers over 80 billion pieces of advertising mail on average; 41 pounds per mailbox. Statistics show that between 44 and 59 percent of mail we receive annually ends up in the trash.
In a time when green energy and environmental awareness are among the top issues globally, we are cutting down over 2.5 million trees each year to account for junk mail advertisements - trees that are the natures way of taking harmful green house gases from the atmosphere and turning them into oxygen.
The Postal Service has increased its delivery of such mailings over the past few years to curb its losses, with no regard to the fact its detrimental to the environment.
This waste of resources needs to end. If people want advertisements, they can opt in, not out.
