The area of the Santa Rita mountains are home to the only known Jaguar in the United States. It is also home to the rare Ocelot and a dozen other endangered species. The area also holds some spiritual significance to the native cultures in the area, sacred sites in this area will be destroyed. The USFWS own biologists along with the Arizona Fish & Game have said that allowing this mine to proceed will destroy the habitat permanently along with the many endangered species. The director of the USFWS has not listened to his agencies own scientist when making his proposal to allow the mine to proceed. Open Pit mines like this one do not only ruin the earth, but pollute the water ways from run off and this mine will use the water of a nearby creek that relies on rainwater to keep it flowing.
