The electoral college is a leftover relic from a time when the country couldn't effectively communicate in real time. We can now see the popular vote results from anywhere within minutes of the polls closing. 4 times now, America has named a president that lost the popular vote. This is an issue to which candidates anywhere on the political spectrum are susceptible. Election outcomes should always be based on the popular vote. This would also eliminate any gerrymandering, at least for the presidency.
