The fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman took place on the night of February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida, United States. Zimmerman was treated for bloody wounds, questioned for 5 hours and had his sidearm impounded, but he was released as a case of self-defense. However, 6 weeks later, amidst a media circus involving misleading accusations of racism, Zimmerman was charged with murder by a new prosecutor and tried for second-degree murder and manslaughter. He was found not guilty on July 13, 2013.
We demand that the DOJ not take this any further with any federal charges. This was decided by a jury already and would be a violation of the Double Jeopardy Clause which prohibits state and federal governments from prosecuting individuals for the same crime more than once.
