On 1/3/13 Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) reintroduced “The Personhood Bill” which claims the human zygote should be granted all the legal attributes and privileges of personhood.
If the zygote obtains personhood status then the sperm deserves the same status for it has much in common with the zygote. The zygote has one cell and the sperm has one cell. The zygote is alive and the sperm is alive. The zygote is of human origin and the sperm is of human origin. The zygote is essential to making a human being and the sperm is essential to making a human being.
But a sperm is persevering and noble. Against all odds, it swims the equivalent of countless human miles to reach its goal – the ovum. The lone victor will live and evolve, the teeming losers having played their part in the scheme of life die.
