Taiwan Ex-president Chen has been in jail for 5 years without due legal process, and is now deteriorating in his health. His speech becomes slurred, and has tremor of hands and unsteady gait. As a neurologist who had been a professor of neurology in the University of Kansas for 20 years, I had the opportunity of examining him personally, and I do feel he is suffering from a progressive degenerative diseases affecting the central nervous system, and on top of that he has severe depression and severe obstructive sleep apnea which have been diagnosed by sleep experts and psychiatrists. We do believe Ex-President Chen deserves a medical parole to be free from the jailed condition, and receive medical treatment and humane care.
