Cyprus has been a divided country since the Turkish invasion in 1974 with the Turkish-Cypriots at the North, and the Greek-Cypriots in the South. Before the invasion the population of Cyprus was 80% Greek-Cypriots, 18% Turkish -Cypriots and 2% other ethnic minorities. During the Turkish invasion 200,000 Greek-Cypriots became refugees in the own country, and about 1,619 went missing which is still a burning issue. Now the country is split in two; with the Turks holding the 37.7% of the island and the Greek-Cypriots the rest. Cyprus is a member of the European Union since 2005. Turkey wants to join the EU but do not recognise the legitimate government of Cyprus. On a referendum Cyprus said NO to partition and the vast majority of Cypriots want a Reunification.
