The death penalty is an expensive, irrational, and corrupt process that has been plaguing the United States Government for years. This tool seems illogical: it costs more than a sentence to life imprisonment, it has repeatedly targeted racial and social minorities, and courts have consistently executed innocent men and women (4% of all those condemned are innocent). Studies have shown that the existence of capital punishment does nothing to lower crime rates nationwide. Moreover, this practice is still not carried out speedily. Many of those condemned wait in prison for 20-30 years before they are executed; while this grants time to gather evidence if the convict is innocent, how is this not, "cruel and unusual punishment." Why does the United States Government condone the death penalty?
