The Arctic is a delicately balanced ecological system. An oil drilling "accident" would be disastrous for the sea, the land, and the creatures dwelling there; the repercussions would be felt throughout the world for years to come! Shell assured Americans that their processes and equipment were well-adapted to Arctic conditions, and that they had methods in place to quickly clean up all spills. However, in the first few months of attempting to drill, Shell has lost control of both their rigs: the Discover slipped anchor in Dutch Harbor this summer, the Kulluk ran aground near Kodiak Island on New Year's Eve. Their clean-up barge does not meet Coast Guard standards. Shell has proven it cannot be trusted with this ecological treasure. Withdraw permission for Shell to drill in the Arctic.
