By continuing to serve on the Council, the United States legitimizes a group that attempted to nominate Sudan--a country whose president has been indicted for crimes against humanity and genocide--to the Council. Of this year's twenty nominees--which include human rights abusers such as Ethiopia, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela--only eleven are ranked fully "free" by U.S. watchdog publication "Freedom in the World." The U.S. must end its participation in this perversion of human rights.
