The United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) is a comprehensive document establishing practical rules and standards governing nations on the use of the oceans. While the treaty touches upon almost every conceivable issue, one matter is not made clear, the epitomization of Article 2, Section 1 of the United Nations Charter, which states:
"The Organization is based on the principle of sovereign equality for all its Members."
UNCLOS cannot and should not be ratified by the United States until a concrete affirmation by the United Nations to uphold the sovereignty of all nations in accordance with the above provision is included. All related substance within UNCLOS should be amended to align with this affirmation.
