Work to ban the federal death penalty

The death penalty violates the Constitution as it represents cruel and unusual punishment. More than that, though, it is entirely immoral for the state to kill in vengeance in the names of its citizens. Furthermore, it is meted out in an arbitrary fashion--full 74% of the people on death row are minorities. Over 100 people have been proven to have been innocent after their condemnations and years in prison--eye witness errors, recanted testimony, and new DNA evidence are just some elements of exoneration. Others were put to death even though there were serious doubts about their guilt. And, financially, it is less expensive to have a person sentenced to life in prison without parole than to have him/her sentenced to death. We should be a nation that champions human rights!
