Now that women are eligible for front-line combat roles, it is time to reconsider the Selective Service Act, which compels all males between the ages of 18 and 25 to register should the US government ever determine that the all-volunteer military is inadequate and reinstate the use of conscription.
Not only is the male-only requirement in the SSA out of sync with recent policy changes under Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to allow women in front-line combat roles, but it is sexist in that it discriminates against young men.
The SSA should either be amended to require the registration of all men AND women between the ages of 18 and 25, or repealed.
